It is unwise to rely solely on the birth chart in jyotish; one must also judge the innate strengths or weaknesses of individual planets in various matters; this is what the vargas or divisional charts are meant to do. Here we present three important vargas: the navamsa, the dasamsa and the hora varga to aid you in gauging the strength of planets with consideration of how they impact a person's mundane wellbeing.
[]
Aside from the lagna varga the 9th division or navamsa is the second most important chart, and is used to gauge the overall ability of the planets to deliver good or bad results.
For instance, a planet in its fall might not neccessarily continue to produce its bad results if it is well-placed and strong in the navamsa; conversely a planet may be unable to produce good results or even produce bad ones if it is poorly placed or heavily afflicted in the navamsa.
A navamsa may be used to predict the following:
- Marriage/preferred choice of partners
- Money
- General wellbeing
- Life from 30s until death.
It is suggested that synastry and the existence of occult abilities may be extrapolated from this chart.

IIX 23.4– 26.6° |
IX 26.7– 29.9° | |
Assumptions[]
- Debilitation or affliction suppresses a planet's ability to grant good results.
- According to the astrologer Kapiel Raaj, dana-yogas in this divisional chart have significance.
- A strong placement for a planet here enhances its ability to produce good results even in spite of bad placements in lagna varga.
- A person's motives for marriage as well as the traits of potential partners can be predicted from the use of this chart.
- The power of the lunar nodes over a person's psyche is reinforced if:
- They retain their houses or signs in the navamsa, or
- They exchange signs or houses with each other in the navamsa.
- A planet is said to be vargottama if it retains the same it occupies in the lagna varga. In which case, the significance of the planet as it is in the lagna varga is intensified: if it is in a good sign, it produces good results; else the bad effects are similarly intensified if it is in vargottama.

- One must pay attention to the existence of raj-yogas in this divisional chart.
Panchamsa (d5)[]
Generally speaking, the panchamsa is a divisionasl chart which gauges the impact of the planets upon the issues that are governed by the 5th House — which is taken by Indian astrologers to revolve around children, and so the panchamsa is used to gauge a person's ability to have children.
The nature of one's relationship to one's offspring and chances of having chldren are also said to be gauged from this chart.
